I’ll Always Keep That Name — Episode 1

[ Mia’s Castle - Balcony ]

Akira: The sunset-tinted snowy mountains are so beautiful…
The ambience is pleasant, the sight wondrous — what a lovely place to be.

I was at the balcony of the witch Mia’s castle in Northern Country. I was having a grand time taking in the magnificent view of the snowy mountain range.

Akira: … Oh, I think something landed by my feet.
…… I wonder what it is? A bird feather? It looks beautiful, but it feels ominous somehow…

Mithra: Kenja sama.
Bradley: Oh, that’s the good shit you got there.

Akira: Mithra, Bradley, do you two happen to know what this feather is exactly?
Mithra: That’s a feather from a native cursed bird. Its body, from its blood to its flesh, can be used as foci for magic.
Bradley: Yeah, this feather’s a real rare find. The payout you’d get for just one of ‘em would let you live like a king for three days and three nights.
Akira: It’s that rare of a thing?!
A-And by cursed bird, if I remember correctly, there was that one time Owen had to swallow this cursed bird thingy called a maleficium…

Back then, Owen had been left gasping for air. I remember him looking as pale as a corpse; his sweat had turned black as he writhed in obvious suffering…
My blood ran cold at once.

Akira: W-What should we do? D-Does that mean I just touched something I wasn’t supposed to?!
Bradley: Don’t shit your pants just yet. It’s not like you swallowed the entire thing whole like Owen did.
Nothing’s gonna happen just because you touched a single feather.
Mithra: If you don’t want it, I’ll take it off your hands. It’ll make an excellent cursed tool.
Bradley: Hold up, that ain’t how this works. Treasure can only be called treasure in the right hands — the hands of someone who knows its true value.
Mithra: Then, there is no one more suitable to possess it than I. Amateurs at handling cursed tools should keep their distance.
Bradley: Hey, man, listen to yourself. You’re telling me you’re a connoisseur when you can’t even tell the difference between a rock and a chunk of meat?
Mithra: I am. I do not have a hobby of collecting junk. We are not the same.
Bradley: Oh yeah? You lookin’ down on me?

Akira: (I sense danger brewing… I’ve got to stop them before this turns into a full-blown argument!)

Akira: Mithra, Bradley, please calm d……

Mithra: What do you think, Kenja sama?
Akira: Me??
Mithra: Between me and Bradley, who do you think deserves to have the feather? It must be me, most certainly?
Bradley: Nah, it’s gotta be me, right?
Akira: (sputter) Wh…? Well, I… uh……

Even though they’d just turned the focus of conversation onto me, Mithra paid me no heed and started turning on Bradley instead. He puffed his chest out at him.

Mithra: Kenja sama has chosen me. That’s because, if it’s between you and me, there’s no doubting it — she simply likes me more.
Bradley: The hell you talkin’ ‘bout, man……
Mithra: I’m talking about how I have something you don’t.
I have a nickname that Kenja sama here gifted me with. I don’t think you have one, do you?

I’ll Always Keep That Name — Episode 2

Bradley: By nickname, don’t tell me it’s that thing you were on about that time when we were in the Forest of Dreams? I don’t recall, Mimi or Sleepyhead or whatever the hell it was…
You ain’t no rugrat. Hey, surely you could’ve come up with something that sucks less.
Akira: I’m sorry… I-It was the best that I could come up with, for a nickname that both suited his image and rolled off the tongue……
Mithra: Anyway, I win. You don’t have a nickname, Bradley.
Bradley: Stop embarrassing yourself. The Great Bradley’s got tons of cool and awesome aliases and epithets.
…… Right, I’ve got a brilliant idea. How about I give you an epithet?
Mithra: Come again?
Akira: Bradley, you’ll… what?
Bradley: You heard me. I’ll give Mithra an epithet he'll want to bring out for all the special occasions.
And Mithra, if you like it, you’ll let me have that feather. How’s that sound? A pretty solid deal, right?
Mithra: Well… fine, why not. Please make it something cool and unforgettable from the moment one hears it.
Bradley: Roger that. Just you wait.

Bradley spent a moment thinking. His expression morphed into one of sheer confidence.

Bradley: …… I’ve got it. I’ve got just the thing—
Shinigami of Red’.

Mithra & Akira: (impressed hum)

Akira: You’re right. That sure is a name you won’t forget, and it’s cool too…!
Bradley: Heh, whenever you talk about Mithra of the North, you’ve got to talk about death too. The one and only Mithra leaves nothing but ashes and dust in his wake. That’s just the sort of guy he is.
And it sends a shiver down your spine, when you see the red of his hair, like an unearthly fire burning against the snow.
That’s you in a nutshell, so it’s a great epithet, ain’t it?
Mithra: I think it’s better to leave some bones behind. But having said that, I think it has a way better and cooler ring than ‘Demon Lord’, so I quite like it.
Bradley: If you’re satisfied with that nickname, then let me have the feather.
Mithra: What? No. I won’t.
Bradley: Okay, but why? You liked Shinigami of Red.
Mithra: Yes, I do like it. But the nickname I got from Kenja sama sees use, too.
Bradley: Well, I think the one I came up with is far more suitable for you than that lame-ass nickname. Why’re you being so particular?
Mithra: ………
It’s a secret.
Bradley: (sigh) Whatever. This has taken far too long. Let’s just throw down real quick to decide who gets the feather.
Mithra: That sounds nice and simple. To make it easy on us, let’s say that the victor shall be the one who blows up the most mountains.
Akira: Wait, what!?

Akira: (T-This is bad…! I’ve got to stop them before they rain down death and destruction…!)

I’ll Always Keep That Name — Episode 3

Akira: Umm, it’s a bad idea to go rampaging where civilians live, because it’s not good to, uhh, cause havoc in the neighbourhood!
And I think Mia san would be really angry if you changed the scenery around us on a whim!
Bradley: Right…
Mithra: I don’t see your point. Bradley, hurry up and take out your magical tool so we can quickly settle this once and for all.

Bradley: …… Nah, I think I’ll pass. We’d never hear the end of it if we went on a rampage in her territory.
On second thought, it’s a bad look to throw hands here.
I’m outtie. Mithra, you can have the feather.
Mithra: Huh? Why? You’re the one who started the whole contest.
Bradley: I’m not so uncouth that I’d trample over a lady’s garden, you know?

Bradley: …… Kenja. That was a clever move, bringing up Mia like that.

Having whispered that into my ear, Bradley left the balcony.

Akira: (I think I managed to avert a crisis…?)

Mithra: What a fickle person. I have no idea what just happened, but I suppose the feather’s all mine now.

Mithra glanced between the feather in my hand and me, and he looked like he had something to say to me.

Mithra: Why didn’t you choose me from the start?
You like me, don’t you? You always tell me that you’re counting on me.
Akira: Well, I…
Mithra: I think I shall blow up a mountain after all.
Akira: Wha—!! WAIT!!
Mithra’s the best! I love him! Oh, my goodness, oh my goodness, I would be so, so very honoured if you would take this feather!
Mithra: (soft, proud laugh) If only you’d said that right from the start.

I handed Mithra the feather. He gazed upon the feather with an expression of satisfaction.
He looked just like a child who had just been given candy and was now as pleased as Punch.

Akira: … Say, Mithra, why are you so keen on the nickname I gave you?
The one Bradley gave you was far more appropriate and way cooler…

Mithra’s gaze shifted away from the feather, only for it to settle on me. He stared at my face.

Mithra: It’s a secret.

Card Episode: Meat Messiah

[ Magical Manor - Meeting Lounge ]

Mithra: You’ve been here all along? I was looking all over for you.
Akira: Oh, Mithra, what’s up?
Mithra: Remember that feather you picked up back in Northern Country? I fashioned it into a cursed tool. I thought I’d show it to you.
Akira: Right, I picked it up in Mia’s castle, and it was from a cursed bird!
Mithra: That’s right. Now, what I’m about to show you is a cursed tool I’ve not shown anyone else yet. Behold.
Akira: Wow… Those colours are kind of toxic-looking, but It looks just like a quill pen! Its tip looks so fluffy too…
Mithra: I think it’s better not to touch it. Your blood will spray out of every single pore of your body.
Akira: Every single pore…!?
Mithra: After that, you’ll have a headache so terrible you’ll be crying in anguish for three days and three nights. And at the very end of it all, your cranium will splinter open.
Akira: (pathetic whimpering)
Mithra: Well, it’s just one feather. I don’t think anything too bad will happen.
Alright. I think I shall now try it on Oz.
Akira: What!?

Akira: (What a dangerous idea! I’ve got to stop him!)

Akira: J-Just one moment, please! Aren’t there other uses for that cursed tool you’ve made?!
Mithra: Other uses… Such as?
Akira: Umm, like, for instance… cooking! I’ve heard that meat tastes better if you drain out all the blood first, and it’ll get rid of the aftertaste…
Mithra: … You have a point. I feel like Nero’s mentioned that before.
Recently, I hauled a freshly-hunted deer from the mountains into the kitchen, and he spent the entire time mumbling and muttering to himself…
Akira: Meat straight from the source, huh… But if you think about it, Mithra, you might’ve just invented something truly amazing without having realised it.
It’ll revolutionise processed meat! You might just be the next meat messiah!
Mithra: A meat messiah…
Oh, that does have a nice ring to it.
