May Love Echo Where Snow Falls - Episode 9

⭠ last episode | Episode 9 | next episode ⭢

Nero: ... It's not gonna start rampagin' on us, right?
Murr: I wouldn't know about that! You see, it's got a whole lover to avenge.
Owen: Yup. It looks like it really hates you.
Mithra: Please don't worry about me. If that happens, I'll bury it alongside the deer.
Snow: Mithra chan!? No such thing as breaking it a second time, alright!?

Our worries were soon proven unfounded.

[ Chirp! ]

The peryton let out a completely different cry from what we'd heard during our first encounter with it. It was a cry that was plainly happy.
Step after excited step, the peryton approached the deer sculpture and fondly nuzzled it with its cheek.

Lennox: The way it's behaving... Seems like what Rustica said was indeed true.
Akira: Seems like it. It seems so happy to just be next to it...
Rutile: Fufu, it's a happy thing to be able to meet your beloved once the dust has settled.
Lennox: Right. It probably wouldn't have given up on a reunion just because its beloved disappeared.
Or it might have even set off on a journey to find its lover, no matter the odds.
... After all, sudden farewells where you never get to say good-bye leaves behind regrets you can't erase, like coal stains that remain forevermore.

Up until now, the silvery-white deer was something that the peryton couldn't see from up close no matter how much it loved it.
And now that it could, the peryton must have been truly happy.

Rutile: I'm not sure why, but it seems like that even the deer sculpture looks happy to see the peryton.
Snow: Ohoho. you could say so -- it did meet its lover!
And speaking of which, I would like to meet White soon too.

Smiling wryly, Snow flicked his hand outwards, tossing open his cloak as he did.
His palm glowed with a silver light.

Snow: « noscommunia »

The light in his palm shot towards the deer made of snow.
When the light dispersed, something budded from its back like little sprouts.
It grew into large wings, angelic and pure, beautiful and silvery-white.
The other wizards too, followed suit with their own spell-words:

Rutile: « allitnic setomaoje »
Lennox: « forsethao meiuva »
Nero: « adnodis omnis »
Murr:
« eanul rambul » !
Mithra: « arsim »
Owen: ...... « quare moritor »

Rustica:
« amorest viesse »

The wizards' magic seemed to have breathed life into the deer.
Its newly-grown wings ruffled and spread, as if it were hatching from a cocoon.

Akira: It flew...!

Bit by bit, it gained height, albeit shakily.
As if to guide it, the peryton spread its own wings.
It flew to the deer's side, before taking to the skies proper, seemingly inviting it to follow.
Flapping its wings, the snow deer flew after the peryton, and the two of them circled the skies in harmony.

Murr: Ahaha! They're flying while looking at each other! They're so happy they couldn't hold themselves back!

Murr spun in place, and as if to give them a parting gift, whistled after them.
The two creatures danced in the air in delight.

Rustica: Oya...

[ It's snowing. ]

Snow started to fall like petals from above and around the peryton and deer.

Rustica: Look, Kenja sama. It's a present from the skies.
It's almost as if it's sending the lovebirds its well-wishes.

Light that filtered in from between the clouds illuminated the snowflakes with a pretty sparkle.
The snowflakes were like a flower shower accompanying a bride down the aisle.
The golden peryton and the silvery deer raced off into the distance, accompanied by a blessing from the skies—
— And soon we could no longer see them with a thick curtain of snow between us.

Snow: The deer will not lose its form for a while, for we have reinforced it with magic.
For now, the peryton will be able to spend time with its lover.
Akira: I'm happy to hear that... Thank you, everyone.

I remembered how happy the peryton had seemed, and what Snow said sounded like nothing but good news.
Gradually, a warm atmosphere filled the air as everyone relaxed.
Yet amongst us was one lone wizard who stared up at the sky.

Nero: ......
Akira: Nero? Is something the matter?
Nero: Nah... just thinking about stuff.

Nero wore an unreadable expression as he continued to watch the sky that once housed the peryton and deer.

Nero: No magic lasts forever. There might be happiness now.
But someday, the dream will end, and the deer will return to nothing.

Akira: Ah...
Nero: The peryton went through all that to reunite with its lover. When it loses its lover again... I wonder what the peryton'll think.
Akira: (Nero...)

I couldn't find the right words to say.
Nero laughed and patted me on the shoulder.

Nero: Well, I might be overthinking it. After all, I'm someone who can't lose myself to happiness for fear of losing happiness itself.
My bad for gettin' all sentimental on you.

His apology might have been clumsy, but I smiled in response all the same.

The townspeople started filing into the Garden of Ice then.
It seemed like Snow had told them it was alright to come back.

Town Residents: Oh, the deer sculpture is missing!
You're right. Hey, only the deer is missing!

Akira: Ah...!
Nero: Yeeeah......
Snow: Ohoho. Indeed it is.

There was now an empty space amongst the sculptures. It was where the deer sculpture once stood, right in the middle of the garden square.

Akira: (What should we do? Once again, the efforts to complete the sculptures were all for naught...)

Snow slowly approached one of the men who had been searching for the missing statue — the very person who had sculpted the deer.

Snow: We had cast magic upon the deer sculpture so that it may protect the town from fiends. In other words, it has flown somewhere far, far away with the peryton...
And you, the sculptor, are none other than the town's hero for this. Great job.
Deer Sculptor: Snow sama... I see. I am honoured that the deer I sculpted could be exchanged for the safety of everyone in this town.

The man bowed deeply and sincerely.

It was then that Rustica spoke aloud.

Rustica: Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for coming here today.
The fiend that has been terrorising the Garden of Ice, a peryton, has now set off on a journey accompanied by its beloved deer.
That is why you all needn't worry any longer. I'm certain they will no longer return to this town.

Rustica's elegant, kind, and calm voice echoed in the cold and crisp air.
It caught everyone's attention.
Rustica gently smiled at everyone. In a refined manner, Rustica placed his right hand on his chest, spread his left arm like a wing, and bowed.
It was like the arrival of spring and warm sunlight, a sign that winter had passed — warm, pure, yet immaterially beautiful.

[ Rustica CG ]
[ Event theme song BGM ]
Rustica: To the traveller peryton, who had lost his life, changed his appearance, and yet, never gave up on his journey to find his beloved...
We offer up our celebrations. For that long journey has finally ended today.

Rustica: « amorest viesse »

Rustica chanted his spell-word, and light gathered where the deer once stood.
Six shards of various shapes and sizes formed. They swirled and gathered together.
They merged into a pillar of ice — the sound of cracking and crushing came together in harmony to form a song as it built itself up towards the sky.
Finally, like a fireworks display, it burst open to form a dome of ice.
Sunlight filtered in through the round icy roof.

Town Residents: (gasping)
Rutile: Oh, how lovely! ... Ah, look, right in the middle...

I followed Rutile's gaze. Right in the middle of the dome was a harpsichord.
Around the harpsichord were rows of chairs made from ice.

Lennox: That's amazing. It's a concert hall made from ice.
Snow: Ohoho. How lucky we are to have a feast for both our eyes and ears.
Akira: Oh, this song...

Rustica: .........

The Traveller Peryton on the Journey of Love.
That was the song he played.

The melody coming from Rustica's performance echoed far and wide, and I was certain that it'd reach the faraway skies that the pair had disappeared into.
