Smoke! Fire! Gunpowder! Stealing the Tesoro of the Feast! - Episode 8

⭠ last episode | Episode 8 | next episode ⭢

Snow: No… Even if it did have such an effect, it’s unlikely that the vouivre grew to unthinkable proportions from that alone.
The stone’s effects probably went into overdrive due to the influence of the < Great Calamity >.
White: There we have it. The vouivre king and its gemstone…… or let us declare it: it’s the Walpurgisnacht.
In the end, this is all because of the Walpurgisnacht.
An unnatural power so strong it forced open this ravine. The mysterious attacks that befell anyone who came to investigate. If we attribute everything to it — then it all makes sense.

At that, the loudest roar I’d heard yet resounded through the chamber.
As if it were some sort of rallying cry, the scattered flock of vouivre regrouped with a vengeance.

Shino:
There are more of these things coming out of hiding! A lot more!
Bradley: The king’s call to arms, huh. What a well-run kingdom.
Snow: Now’s not the time for that!
White: It aims to overrun us with sheer numbers!

Just like White said, the flock of vouivre now surged forth, wings beating and swooping in on us for the kill.

Cain: We fight! Kenja sama, keep your head down!
Akira: Got it…!

Shino: « matzah sudipas » !

Shino: Come at me. I’ll chop all your heads off and bring them back to Heath as a souvenir.

Figaro: « possideo »
Snow & White: « noscommunia »

The wizards met the onslaught of vouivre with their own attacks. No individual vouivre matched up to the might of the Walpurgisnacht, but they were many, and they poured forth in droves

Owen: These creatures are pathetic, a flock of fools, biting at ankles at the beck and call of their King.
They can hardly be called beasts; they are no more than puppets unable to act without orders. What a sorry state. Off with the King’s head, I say. I’ll do it myself and release these wretches from their misery.

Owen: « cur memini »

Owen swerved away from the swarm of vouivre and chased after the gemstone, firing off spells at it as he did.
However, his attacks missed their mark and struck the rocky walls instead.

[ Crumble… ]

Owen: Tch…… It dodged.
Bradley: It’s an annoying one. You can’t see it, and it’s faster than you think. By the time you’ve taken aim, it’s already ready to dodge your next attack.
Snow: It’s going to take a mighty lot of work just to take it down.
Mithra: Right. Basically, we just have to aim our attacks at that stone, right?

Mithra spoke, sounding unconcerned and unbothered; his eyes trailed after the gemstone as if it were an insect. Casually, he cast a spell.

A massive boulder hurtled the wrong way.

Akira: Ah.

[ Crash! ]

The boulder crashed into the wall with a terrible, glorious noise, and then the wall started to crumble magnificently.

Mithra: Oh, well.
Snow: You did not just ‘oh, well’!
White: You must at minimum try to aim!
Mithra: It’s not easy because I can’t see clearly. No matter. I shall take ten shots at a time. Surely one of them will hit.
Snow & White: Noooo—!

Figaro: If this goes on, we’ll end up irreversibly changing the landscape. It’ll probably affect the nearby settlements…
Mithra: I think that’s alright though. It’s good to have a change of scenery every now and then.
Akira: (He makes it sound like it’s no different from getting a new hairstyle…!)
Owen: Mithra is just a brute with no control over his strength.
Mithra: What? You missed too.
Owen: That’s totally different. My attack was dodged. Yours missed.
Mithra: That was just a coincidence. My next blow will kill.

Mithra and Owen traded verbal jabs as they sped after the Walpurgisnacht together.

While the rest of the wizards staved off the vouivre, the two of them remained hot on the heels of the Walpurgisnacht, firing off attack after attack in competition with each other.

Mithra: « arsim »

[ Boom! ]

Owen:
« cur memini »

[ Crash! ]

But all of their attacks missed. Their attacks grew reckless, perhaps due to their irritation.

Akira: (small, worried sigh) Their attacks keep striking the walls……
Snow: This is bad.
White: Very bad.
Though it is admittedly true that if this ravine were to cave in, it would take this monstrosity down with it. We could somehow find a way to escape, too……
Figaro: But considering how there’s villages and settlements nearby, we can’t simply go ‘oh well’ and call it a job well done. We came here after accepting a request for aid. We should do our best to complete it with as little bloodshed as we can.
Snow: Figaro chan, are you able to rein in those rascals?
Figaro: Not a chance.
Snow & White: We thought so~

Snow: In that case, we have no choice but to raise a barrier to prevent further damage to the ravine walls. It is better to fortify the cage rather than admonish a rampaging bear for its actions, after all.
Snow & White: Mithra, Owen!
Snow: We’ll look the other way and let you two’s mischief slide if you remember to keep your strength in check!
White: Don’t go any harder than you have already! The foundation won’t hold!

Mithra: (sigh) I can’t hit it……
Owen: Ugh, how infuriating.

Figaro: They’re having so much fun running amok, they aren’t listening to a word you say.

Bradley: ………

After giving Mithra and Owen a brief glance, Bradley approached us.

Bradley: Guys, lend me your ears. I’ve got an idea.

Cain and Shino sent the surrounding vouivre scattering before rushing to Bradley’s side.

Shino: What is it.
Cain: What’s up?
Bradley: To be honest, the reason I’m here today is that I’m after that gemstone, the one that monster’s gone and swiped for itself.

The two of them wore expressions of surprise as they stared at Bradley.
Having anticipated such a reaction, Bradley pulled them both close by the shoulders into a huddle. He lowered his voice.

Bradley: Now, I don’t care about what vouivre king or nothin’, but — it stole what the Great Bradley had his eye on.
Of course I’d want to send it straight to hell, but that has to come after me reclaiming what’s rightfully mine.
That said, if I let Mithra and Owen have their way here, the gemstone’s going to be destroyed. Let them go too far, and the whole ravine’s gone too.
So, that’s where you guys come in.
Cain: Us?
Bradley: Yeah. Us three, we’re going to turn this battle around on its head. Getting stuff done and succeeding at it is how you become a real man.
How about that? Don’t you wanna be the one to strike down a monster that even the Mithra has a hard time with?

Bradley had an attractive proposition. It caught the interest of the two wizards who had, for their own separate reasons, intently watched Mithra’s overwhelming displays of strength.
It was a rare opportunity, and it was tempting — and so the both of them nodded.

Shino: Do you even need to ask? Of course I’m down.
Cain: Count me in too. I want to test my strength against an enemy as strong as that.
Bradley: That’s what I figured you’d say. I’ll only say this once, so listen closely. The plan is to……

[ Scene fades. ]

[ Bradley flies over to Mithra and Owen. ]

Bradley: Yo, my brothers. I see you’ve got your hands full. You’re probably getting tired too, huh.
Mithra: It’s annoying how it darts about here and there. Chasing after a tiny gemstone is also a huge bother.
Owen: Bradley. You’ve been slacking off all by yourself.
Bradley: That’s because I figured you two would’ve turned it into stone by now, but you guys are still here flying around and frolicking.
Don’t tell me that’s all the strength that the Northern Wizards Mithra and Owen have in them?
Owen & Mithra: ………
Mithra: I’ve changed my mind. I’ll kill you first.
Owen: You’re right. It seems like Bradley here has no regard for his own life.
