A Rather Special Sort of Bond — Episode 1

The flickering torch flames that illuminated the solemn interior of the tower marked our path forwards. Mithra, Heathcliff and I trudged on—
— making our way up towards the topmost floor of the tower in the company of Metus, who kept a watchful eye on our surroundings, ready to pounce on any prey that showed itself.

Heathcliff: We’ve walked and walked, but we’re still so far from the top…
Mithra: I think it’s high time we killed that primal beast. Once it fades away, the tower will too.
Akira: N-No, that’s not an option. Snow and White said that if anything were to happen to the primal, it would affect the mystic tool that created this tower.

Mithra: Who cares what the twins say.
« arsi—

Akira: Ahh! Mithra, wait…!
Heathcliff: Um, uhh… I know! How about we all take a short break? Actually, I’ve got some snacks that Nero packed for me…

At the sound of Heathcliff’s spell-word, two small bundles wrapped in napkins appeared in his open palms. They smelled faintly of something rich and sweet.

Akira: Wow, it smells so good… I don’t suppose they’re cookies?
Heathcliff: Yeah. Oh, I accidentally dropped one of the bundles when we were fighting that magical jellyfish beast earlier, so Mithra and Kenja sama, you can have the one I didn’t drop instead…
Mithra: So you had something like this stowed away all along. You should have told us earlier.
Akira & Heathcliff: Woah!

Mithra snatched up the cookies, napkin and all.
He shook the bundle’s contents out, and he poured a stream of cookies into his open mouth.

Mithra: (crunching) … Hmm, it’s not bad.
Heathcliff: Mithra, you were supposed to share those cookies with Kenja sama…
Mithra: What? You should’ve said so sooner. Should I spit up what I’ve eaten?
Akira: T-There’s no need for that. You can have my share, Mithra.

Akira: (It looks like the cookies improved his mood. A little more rest, and we should be good to… Hnn?)

Sensing something behind me, I turned around.
Little did I expect to see Metus smashing its black tail lined with steel-like scales down upon us.

Akira: Whaaat…!?
Heathcliff: Kenja sama! Over here, quickly…!

In a hurry, Heathcliff grabbed me by the arm and pulled me towards him.
Mithra remained motionless, though he looked quite put upon as he stared up at the primal beast that bore down upon us with its fangs bared.

Mithra: Are you here to seize cookies for yourself? They’re all in my stomach now, so if you’d like some, all you can do at this point is eat me whole.
Not that I’d even let you try.

Mithra said his spell-word, and Metus was instantly blown back and away like a heap of dried leaves.

[ Thud. ]

Metus landed with a resounding slam on the floor. It wobbled back up to its feet. It seemed to give up on its cookie conquest for the time being. It gradually backed away until it vanished from sight.

And so, the cookie dispute drew to a close with Mithra’s overwhelming victory.
— Or so I thought, until…

Mithra: ………
Metus: ……… (growling)

Akira: Um, Mithra…? Is everything alright?
Mithra: Is there a problem?
Heathcliff: It’s Metus. It looks way more murderous than it was earlier, or should I say… Well, it looks like it’s about to attack you, Mithra.
Mithra: That’s fine. Small fry like that won’t be a problem.
Akira: (W-Wow, Mithra’s not worried at all… I guess that’s what it’s like when you’re so strong…)
Heathcliff: …… Right, of course. Mithra’s above and beyond.

A Rather Special Sort of Bond — Episode 2

Mithra: Above and beyond?
Heathcliff: Even if I had the magical strength to defeat Metus, I’d still be terrified if it set its sights on me.
But, Mithra, you’re no different from your usual self. You’re so bold and confident even though it might attack us. And I think that part of you is… cool…
Mithra: …… (soft, satisfied laugh) Of course I am.
Neither of you have to worry at all about that primal beast. If it attacks, I will make sure to protect you two from harm.
Heathcliff: Wh– Really? It gives me courage to know that you’ll protect Kenja sama too, Mithra…
Mithra: No matter who my opponent is, I’ll face them down with the same bold confidence as always, because I am a cool man. It is no trouble for me.
Akira: Thank you very much, Mithra. Please, please come to my aid when times are dire.

Seeing how I’d pleaded so earnestly before him, Mithra laughed, satisfied.
Heathcliff stole a glance over his shoulder at the primal. It was still glowering at us from a distance, and Heathcliff sadly expressed:

Heathcliff: I don’t have the magical strength needed to contend with Metus, so I’d feel more at ease if we had even a slightly better rapport…
Akira: Right, if you two were on friendlier terms, maybe it’ll be less likely to attack you… Mithra, do you have any suggestions for how to befriend it?
Mithra: Who knows? I never once thought about befriending that thing.
Oh, that said, it might work out if you tried interacting with it like you would the Northern Wizards.
Akira: Why Northern?
Mithra: Apparently it’s not all that different in terms of disposition. That’s what the twins said anyway, so I wouldn’t know if it’s true or not.
Heathcliff: Similar dispositions, huh…

Heathcliff muttered that to himself as he looked at the remaining bundle of cookies. The cogs of his mind started to turn.

A while later, the three of us and our one beast resumed our journey upward, but…

Akira: Mithra and the primal beast started fighting and wandered off again…
Heathcliff: Well, people tend to say, ‘the closer you are, the more you fight,’ so maybe it’s a sign that they are getting along well with each other…?

Our conversation continued in such a vein while we waited for the other two to return.
Just then, the floor shook underneath us. These tremors were much stronger than anything I’d felt so far.

Akira: W-What’s making that noise? It sounds like it’s coming towards us…?
Heathcliff: …!
« repsevaivulp sunos » !

Heathcliff conjured magical chains that restrained what was charging straight at us — it was a magical beast that looked like a cross between a giant bull and a hog. It flew into a berserk rage at having its charge forcibly stopped.

Heathcliff: Kenja sama, run! I have barely enough magical strength to contain it…!

The next thing I knew — the enemy beast let loose a shrill, resounding roar, and the giant magical chains that held it down snapped apart.

Heathcliff & Akira: …!

I heard a familiar spell-word, and at the sound of it the gargantuan beast before us disappeared like it was never there.
A beat later, I heard the sound of a magnificent crash followed by a pained cry coming from afar.

[ BGM starts ]
Mithra: … Hmm? What are you two doing down there? You’re slumped over on the floor.
Akira: Mithra! You’re back!
Heathcliff: Thanks. That was you lending us a helping hand, right?
Mithra: Huh? No, not really. It was blocking my way.
Heathcliff: … But you’d just said that you’d protect us…
Akira: (weak laughter) Still, I’m glad you showed up. Thank you.

Akira: Metus attacked at the same time Mithra did, didn’t it?
…… Hmm? Seems like Metus is eating something… Are those cookies?
Heathcliff: Ah… Actually, earlier, I offered the bundle of dropped cookies to Metus, but I did check to make sure that it didn’t mind that the cookies had been dropped earlier…
I figured it was worth a shot, considering how Metus has a similar temperament to the Northern Wizards. If I gave it something tasty, maybe it’d be friendlier towards me.
Akira: That sounds… I think you’ve got a point there. The Northern Wizards each have their own preferences for food, but all of them enjoy a good meal and tasty snacks.

Akira: (I wonder if that’s why Metus came to help us out, just like how Mithra came over to help us out of that pinch?)

Mithra: You sure have some nerve lumping me together with that brute of a primal. Anyway, where’s my cookies?
Heathcliff: (squeak) S-Sorry, Mithra, Metus’s cookies were the ones I had dropped, and I already gave, well, your share was…
Mithra: Hmph. So you’re saying what Metus ate includes my portion as well.

Mithra: « arsim »

Heathcliff & Akira: ……!!

Even though it’d just been attacked out of the blue, Metus wasted no time. Its tail lashed out to counter attack.

The two forces collided.
Thus began the battle for cookie dominance.

Akira: … They sure are having at it again.
Heathcliff: They sure are… But I mean, just look at them. They sort of look like they’re having fun.
Akira: Ahaha… You may be right.

It didn’t matter when or where the attacks happened. It didn’t matter how many times it tasted defeat. They faced every challenge head-on, in endless battle—
Perhaps that was just the rather ‘special’ sort of bond they shared.

[ Magical Manor - Mithra’s Room ]

[ The door opens. ]

Akira: Good evening, Mithra. I’m here to help you sleep.
Mithra: Oh, finally. Please hurry up and come in.
Akira: (entering) Thank you for coming along with us on the mission.
Mithra, about Metus the primal beast… You kept attacking it over and over again, so I was wondering what you thought about your time with it?
Mithra: Something about that beast just doesn’t sit right with me. It’s a glutton, and no matter how many times I beat it up, it keeps stubbornly attacking me over and over again…
I’ve crushed it so many times now, but it still hasn’t tired of picking fights with me. It just won’t give up.
Akira: (Mounting an assault even after countless defeats sure reminds me of… well… Mithra and Oz……)

Akira: But Mithra, you looked like you were on the same wavelength as that primal beast. You two even gave off the same vibes.
Mithra: Really? Well, considering how doggedly it got back onto its feet and stayed alive even after I’d sent it flying, maybe there was some kind of rivalry between us.
For a beast, it’s huge, and it looks strong… If I ever meet it again, maybe I’ll stow it away in a belt bag.
Akira: But why?
Mithra: I’m going to keep it as a pet. It looks way stronger than Owen’s pet, Cerberus, which he keeps in his suitcase.
In times of need, I could send my beast out from my bag. It would strike fear into my opponent and make them falter.
Akira: O-Okay, I see…

Akira: (He’s got quite the unique approach, but that kinda is Mithra for you…)
