May Love Echo Where Snow Falls - Episode 5

⭠ last episode | Episode 5 | next episode ⭢

Rustica: Everyone, I am pleased to introduce my bride.
Nero: Hang on, I don't think that's the case......
Snow: Ohoho. Who would have thought that the peryton could be locked away in a birdcage. Good job, Rustica.
Rutile: What a relief.
It might have been a dangerous fiend, but I'd feel heartbroken if it were to simply die.
Akira: Yeah, me too. I'm glad.

Mithra: Then what's left is to kill that monster. That'll be the end of it.
Rutile & Akira: ...!
Lennox: It might have posed a danger, but I don't think it'd return to a place that hurt it.
How about we release it somewhere far away from this place?
Nero: ... Those aren't light injuries. Northern Country isn't so kind as to let something in that state live on.
Letting it go free in a different location is only delaying the inevitable.
Lennox: We can't kill it right in front of Kenja sama and Rutile though...

[ Murr CG ]
Murr: Noooo, killing it would be such a waste!
Perytons are rare, I wanna observe one up close and proper!

Huddled around Rustica's birdcage, the wizards discussed how to best handle the peryton.
The caged bird chirped softly, as if afraid of what might happen.

Rustica: .........

Akira: (I wonder what the best course of action is...)

Rustica: May I have a moment, everyone?

Rustica was the one who stopped the discussion that went nowhere.
His expression was filled with sadness.
Rustica gently stroked the birdcage as if it might soothe the anxious bird.
Then, he smiled, proper and elegant as he always was.

Rustica: I think she is afraid. I'd like to bring her somewhere quiet now.

[ Rustica flies off. ]

Akira & Rutile: Whaaa...!?
Lennox: They're gone...
Rutile: I wonder if Rustica san is alright. It seems like he truly believes that little bird is his bride...
Akira: That seems to be the case, yes...
Murr: Ahaha. Taking a peryton as his bride — how interesting!
If he were to bring this bride back to the Magical Manor, I'm sure Chloe would be shocked!

[ Town of Ice ]

When we returned from the Garden of Ice, the town residents poured out of their homes.

Town Resident: Snow sama...! Snow sama has returned!
Welcome back. We've been waiting for your return. And White sama... Oh, heavens, he isn't with you?
Snow: Umu. White is away. However, there is nothing to be concerned about.
More importantly, is everyone alright? I'm sure all of you were terrified by the fiend's appearance.
Town Resident: It's all thanks to Snow sama and White sama's protection that we're all unharmed. ... B-but, if I may.
Did you perhaps hear the cries of the fiend just now? It was a terrifying cry, coming from the direction of the Garden of Ice...!
It has never once made such a noise! It worries us. What could have happened at the Garden of Ice...
Snow: Is that why you have emerged from your homes? If that is the case, then there is no need to fear any longer.
The Great Sage and the Sage's Wizards have all just returned from the Garden of Ice itself.
Town Resident: W-What on...! Does... Does that perhaps mean...
Snow: Umu. The fiend that has cast a shadow over the Garden of Ice is no more.

Town Residents: (mumbling then cheering)

Town Resident A: Of course our Snow sama would handle matters so quickly! Thank you very much, all of you...!
Town Resident B: What a relief! Now we can continue our work on the snow sculptures!
Akira: Ah... So, about that......
Town Resident A: We should finish Snow sama and White sama's statues at once! When it's completed, do bring White sama along with you for a visit.
After all, it is a festival to show our gratitude to t both of you. It's now time for all of us to see it to completion!

I looked upon all the bright and smiling faces, heard what they had to say, and found myself unable to break the news.

Mithra: Isn't that an impossible task? Everything is gone. There's nothing left.
Town Resident B: G-gone?
Snow: Indeed. There was a bit of an accident when we were driving the fiend away...

Nero: You ... call that an accident?
Murr: Under the broadest of definitions, it is one!

Akira: I'm sorry. All the sculptures in the Garden of Ice were destroyed.
Rutile: Even though we know everyone has poured their hearts and souls into creating them from scratch... We're truly sorry.
Snow: We considered restoring them with our magic, but it would never measure up to something that was painstakingly handcrafted.
Town Resident A: Oh, no! Please, you needn't apologise!
What matters is that the fiend is now gone. Nothing is more precious than life.
Anyway, the weather around these parts can get pretty harsh and there's no guarantee that the sculptures would have remained standing...

I was relieved that the situation didn't escalate further, and the townspeople seemed to have accepted the events in stride.

Lennox: Then, please allow us to make up for it. Let us help with the sculptures.
We'll do what we can within our power. You'd need more manpower to move snow, or for just about anything that requires manual labour, right?
Town Resident C: Wow, really? Thanks!
Town Resident D: With more hands on deck, we'll definitely be done faster than usual.

Akira: (Thank goodness. We won't have a problem restoring the sculptures, and then the festival can be held as usual.)
(... though if you gave it some more thought, it's not like we've resolved everything.)

I recalled the peryton trapped in Rustica's birdcage.
Quietly, I approached Snow.

Akira: Rustica left with the peryton and hasn't been seen since, so I was wondering... is it fine to leave him be?
Snow: The sealing magic that Rustica uses to trap things in his birdcage is one of the strongest magicks he has at his disposal. We needn't worry. He'll be fine.
In fact, I'd say that it's for the better that we leave the peryton to him.
Akira: Huh? Why is that?
Snow: It's because we haven't decided what to do with that fiend. If we were to tell him the truth and he releases it from captivity, there'd be chaos.
So it's for the best that we leave the peryton to remain a little bird in Rustica's birdcage, at least until the festival is over.
Akira: ............

He had a point, if all you thought about was the bigger picture.
But I was worried as to whether that was actually the right thing to do.

Akira: (And that's because Rustica seems to truly believe that the little bird is his bride...)

Somehow, it felt like we were making use of Rustica's tendency to treasure and protect his bride.

Town Residents: Snow sama, Snow sama.
Snow: Oh, what's the matter?
Town Resident A: If you have the time, we'd like to thank you for driving the fiend away. We would like to hold a feast. What do you think?
Snow: A splendid idea. Make it as grand as you can.
Akira: O-Oh! I'm happy, but I've heard that food is scarce in these la—
Snow: Ohoho. Dear Kenja, there's no need to be considerate.
The residents of this town are all good children that mind their manners. They are merely trying to convey their thanks.
I hope that you would accept their show of gratitude.

Owen: So, will the feast have sweets? If there aren't any, I'll have Nero make some.

Akira: Owen! You're back.
Mithra: Please also make sure there'll be lots of meat chunks. I'm hungry from all that moving about.
Snow: Sigh... As for you two, I don't see even a lick of consideration.
Akira: Ahaha. Then, we'll gladly accept your offer. I look forward to the feast!

Rustica: Oya, I heard that there'll be a feast?
Akira: ...!
Nero: Oh, Groom san's back.

I couldn't help but sneak a peek at the birdcage in Rustica's hands.
A cute bird was definitely in it...
... And it was once a peryton.

Rutile: It seems like the townspeople are throwing us a feast.
Lennox: Right now, Owen and Mithra have just made their requests for the menu.
Rustica: What a lovely proposal. Thank you for having us.
Akira: Also, we have to help with the sculpting tomorrow.
Are you alright with returning to the Magical Manor later than expected?
