Lake of Death - Spot Sub-Episodes

❄️ Memories at the Spot (3)

Akira: Owen, I believe you’ve mentioned that you have visited the Lake of Death.
Owen: Because Mithra dragged me along. It’s really boring here…
Akira: What did you do once he brought you here?
Owen: How would I know.
Akira: Ah, um, no…… Maybe he had something he wanted to show you?
Owen: Something he wanted to show me…… Well, we went to where he lived. He lived on an island riddled with bones in the middle of this lake.
There was this hearth outside made from piled-up stones. An iron pot that looked like it had been in use for hundreds of years was hanging over it.
Akira: It really feels like life in the wilderness.
Owen: The air was frigid, and it was the worst. The lake had frozen over. The chairs were ice cold. And then……
We watched the sun set. It was nice.
Akira: The sunset?
Owen: That’s right. The entire lake looks like a wheat field when gold colours reflect off its frozen surface. Apparently, it’s a view you can only see when the lake is frozen, there’s no blizzard, and the evening skies are clear.
Akira: Oh, wow…… I can’t even begin to imagine what it’s like, considering how grey everything looks now. It sounds really beautiful.
Owen: The glare of it was so bright that it hurt my eyes. Though……
Mithra was quiet, and so was I, like…… it was a strange moment where we weren’t trying to kill each other or anything like that.
Akira: That sounds nice, it reminds me of what friends do. When you two are like that, what do you talk about?
Owen: Nothing at all. We simply look at each other’s faces, and into each other’s eyes. And also at the skies, the lake, the stars, and so on.
Those moments don't mean a thing, so we spend them in silence, listening to the wind.

❄️ Impressions of Mithra (2)

Akira: Owen, you’ve known Mithra since long ago, right? What sort of impression do you have of him?
Owen: Ew.
He's not someone I want to encounter.
But if you asked me if he was a jerk, I don’t think he’s one.
Mithra’s not the type of guy who's a jerk, but I don’t want to cross paths with him.
Akira: Why?
Owen: Most of the time, I can’t beat him in a fight, and then when I lose I get killed, or am forced to do as he says.
But recently, he’s started casually inviting me to tea at random. I wonder if he thinks I’m his friend.

Option 1: You seem like friends.
Option 2: Have you won against Mithra before?
Option 3: What's living with him like?

> You seem like friends.

Akira: You seem like friends.
Owen: What do ‘friends’ do?
‘Friends’ don’t try to kill each other, do they?
Akira: You may have a point……
Owen: Then we’re not what you call ‘friends’. Also, we have no relationship at all. Hasn’t his face been pretty gloomy recently?
Akira: You mean Mithra? I wonder if it’s because he can’t sleep.
Owen: It seems sort of … viscous. It used to look refreshed. I liked that one better.

> Have you won against Mithra before?

Akira: Have you won against Mithra before?
Owen: By decision, yes.
Akira: By decision… Who’s handing out that decision?
Owen: Me, duh?
I once joined forces with some other guys who wanted to kill Mithra. We got him pretty good, and some of us survived.
Akira: I see, even you have conspired with others. Were you one of the survivors then?
Owen: And if I died? Got anything to say about that?

> What's living with him like?

Akira: What's living with him like?
Owen: I eventually got used to it, but initially, I was always on edge. Mithra wasn't the only reason why, though.
Kenja sama, what’s a scary being from your world that is likely to kill you?
Akira: Huh? Let me think… Maybe a bear?
Owen: Well, then it feels just like living with a bear.
This bear sometimes comes over to invite you to tea, and when you’re both having tea, it suddenly makes an attempt on your life because the idea struck its fancy.

❄️ A Fun Spot

Owen: (smiling) Kenja sama, Kenja sama. Hurry up and come over here~
Akira: You seem really happy today, Owen. It's kinda giving me a bad feeling about this……
Owen: Fufu. Here, dangle this string into the big hole in the ice here.
Akira: Ah, is this ice fishing? Is this how you catch fish here?
Owen: Never mind that, just hold this string~
Akira: ………
Do you mind showing me how it’s done?

[ Owen remains smiling, but his eyes are now narrowed. ]

Owen: Ah, you don’t trust me. And here I was thinking I’d be able to show Kenja sama to a wonderful time here.
Akira: No, it’s not like that……
Owen: If this was Prince sama or Knight sama asking you to try this out, you wouldn’t turn them down, would you? That’s so mean. Aah, my feelings are hurt, all because of you.
Akira: …… Okay, okay. I’ll hold the string.

[ Owen smiles happily again. ]

Owen: Fufu. While you’re holding it, you’re supposed to whistle. If you don’t know how to whistle, humming works too. If you don’t call for it, it won’t come.
Akira: Umm…… What exactly are we calling for here?

[ Owen’s smile fades. ]

Owen: Who cares about that. Just do it.
Akira: …… Something is definitely up…… (whistles twice)
…………
Owen: …………

Akira: So, looks like nothing happened……
Owen: That’s not right. Give me the string for a bit.
Akira: Are you sure something’s supposed to happen?
Owen: Archerfish, a fish that responds to sound, will burst out of the water with amazing might. Sometimes, it gets you right in the neck, and you die.
Akira: What the— Isn’t this way too dangerous……

[ Whistle! ]

Owen: Huh…… We’ve whistled so many times, but it still doesn’t want to show up. Maybe it went extinct without me hearing about it.
Akira: This has been extremely dangerous, Owen.
Owen: I told you, it’s fine.
……!?

[ Something whistles through the air.
— Stab!
]

Owen: Uurgh…..
Akira: Noooo! Owen!!
